Nashville International Center of Empowerment (NICE)

NICE helps refugees and immigrants by building strong community relationships, providing sustainable service programs, creating a resource center, and developing robust networking partnerships in Middle Tennessee and across the country. Vanderbilt provided a $20,000 grant to buy materials and hire instructors to get the Hi-SET program off the ground. The Hi-SET program is a preparation course, providing a pre-high school equivalent to non-native speakers, helping students overcome language barriers, adapt to a new education system, and improve their skills to pass the Hi-SET exam (to earn a state-issued high school diploma).T he Vanderbilt Spring 2016 Class’s evaluation found their grant to the Nashville International Center of Empowerment (NICE) to be a good decision with a good outcome.
