The Baylor Spring 2017 Class’s evaluation found that 78% of students voted their $2,850 grant to Avance to be a good decision with a bad outcome, while 22% of the class believed the grant was a mistake. Avance’s goal is to support lower-income parents in learning how to successfully help their children grow by giving insight on what learning looks like at each stage of their preschooler’s development. The grant was intended to support the salary and supplies for a toy-maker program, which would help parents learn how to make developmentally appropriate toys using materials found at home. Avance temporarily shut down during the grant evaluation period due to mounting financial issues, preventing the class from evaluating the grant’s impact, but it has since re-opened.
